A poem from our chairman, Lindsey Burch

CELEBRATING 2020 - CHARTER FAIR

We started planning back in July 2019,
We wanted this year to be the best there has ever been.
We got an extension to our road closure - yippee,
It was approved by ENDC - we were full of glee.
All the High St, Huntingdon Rd and bit of Oundle Rd too,
With the extra roads we were going to have one hell of a do.
Mini Dodgems, a Mini Big Wheel, Scalextric run by bike power,
We had ordered the Sunshine - we didn’t want a shower.
Some of our local groups to get them known, free stalls,
Think it was even mentioned a game with footballs.
More free games, hopefully free rides for all,
Lots of people had booked a stall,
The Church was being included more too,
Booked the Morris Dancers just for you.
A VE tea dance in the Plaza was planned,
We thought it all would be very grand
Steve had got lots of different acts together,
We had it covered, whatever the weather.
Our Theme encompassed all going on this year,
We had three stalls where you could get a beer.
Rugby, Football, Olympics, VE Day too,
All have been cancelled - what a to do
TADS had planned a spectacular game,
So many plans - oh what a shame.
All of a sudden, our World stopped in its tracks.
Corona virus seeped through its cracks.
Everyone was affected by spread of this.
All hugging stopped, not even a kiss.
Social distancing, washing our hands more,
Parcels just left at our front door.
People showing kindness to each other
Not being able to visit family or your Mother
People all put in Lockdown at home,
Only out for exercise, not allowed to roam.
People working from home, many on Furlough
When will it end - we just don’t know?
MANY GOT THE VIRUS AND DIDN’T SURVIVE
WE PRAY FOR THEM, THANK GOD WE ARE ALIVE
No-one knows when large events can re-start,
But believe me, this comes straight from my heart.
Next year is the 30th Anniversary of Charter Fair,
And a great big Celebration we will have, I swear.
